On FuturesVPS, NinjaTrader 8 is pre-installed and Windows is already tuned for trading, so this guide is mostly "connect and verify." If you are on a generic VPS you will also need to install NinjaTrader and disable Windows updates/animations first.
1. Connect to your VPS
You have two options. RDP: use the Remote Desktop client on Windows or Mac, enter your VPS IP and the credentials from your welcome email. Browser (Guacamole): open the access URL on any device — phone, tablet, Chromebook — and your Windows desktop loads in the tab. No software to install.
2. Launch NinjaTrader and connect your data feed
Open NinjaTrader 8. Go to Connections → Configure. Most prop firms and brokers use Rithmic — on FuturesVPS a Rithmic profile is already created, so you just enter your login, password and the system name your firm gave you. Connect, and watch the connection indicator turn green.
3. Set up a clean workspace
- Open a chart for your instrument (e.g. ES 12-26 or MNQ 12-26) and set your timeframe.
- Open the Market Analyzer only for the columns you actually use — each one costs CPU.
- Save the workspace (Workspaces → Save As) so it reloads exactly after a reboot.
4. Add DrawdownGuardian (prop-firm traders)
If you are on an evaluation, load DrawdownGuardian on your chart and pick your firm's profile (Apex, TopStep, MFF, Bulenox or TakeProfitTrader) and account size. It then tracks your trailing drawdown from the high-water mark and shows a SAFE / CAUTION / DANGER overlay so you never breach unnoticed. See the prop-firm VPS page for the full profile list.
5. Verify latency
From the VPS, a quick ping to the CME subnet should show round-trips well under a millisecond on Chicago-edge hardware — FuturesVPS averages 0.52ms to CME Aurora. If you are seeing tens of milliseconds, your VPS is not actually near the exchange.
6. Configure auto-restart
Set NinjaTrader to launch on Windows login and reload your saved workspace, so an overnight reboot brings you back to exactly the same screen. FuturesVPS monitoring also checks your server every 30 seconds and alerts on problems.
That's it
Connect, configure your feed, save a workspace, load DrawdownGuardian, verify latency. New to choosing specs? Read the best VPS for NinjaTrader guide. You can run this whole setup on the $1.99 trial first.
